Ranking the Taylor Swift of Preschool Pop
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood has some of the catchiest jingles—hands down. Not only are they fun, but there are also a few that can be incredibly helpful in helping toddlers manage feelings, change, or transitions. Here, we’ve ranked the very best tunes from your favorite PBS show.
"Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood" is a favorite among parents. Sure, we love how the characters model empathy for children, but it’s the music we truly stick around for.
The songs are crafted by a trio of producers at Voodoo Highway Music Group who all grew up watching Fred Rogers’ original show. “We’ve worked on a lot of shows with educational goals like literacy and numeracy, but 'Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood' is rare in that it aims to give kids an emotional education,” says Graeme Cornies, one of the show’s composers. “Every episode leaves its viewers with a bite-sized musical strategy to help parents and kids with one of the common challenges of childhood, Cornies told Awards Focus. In our house, the jingles have been incredibly helpful when teaching my kiddos how to handle conflict, big emotions, and change.
Parents looking for screen-free access to the catalog will find it on Spotify, which is home to more than 70 songs. Below, I’ve included my definitive ranking of the most grr-iffic tunes from the adorable PBS show, as well as a playlist to listen along.
10. “When You Have to Go Potty”
This song became a chant when we taught our youngest daughter how to potty train. The writers score bonus points for encouraging toddlers to flush and wash.
9. “When You Feel So Mad”
When Daniel and Prince Wednesday learn their beach day is rained out, they use this song to manage their feelings. Parents have big feelings, too. Maybe that’s why I sing this at least once a week.
8. “Enjoy the Wow”
This track feels like a ’70s pop hit with a message on mindfulness, teaching toddlers to slow down, look around, and be thankful for everything around them.
7. “Find a Way to Play Together”
The problem-solving approach to conflict in this song is a reminder that building community begins with being considerate.
6. “Give a Squeeze Nice and Slow”
Parents of wiggly preschoolers will love this song about channeling excess energy. The lyrics prompt children to give themselves a gentle hug and a deep breath to calm their minds and body.
5. ”As Long As You’re With Family You’re Home”
As a recent transplant, I found this song helpful when addressing the anxieties of change and celebrating the unique ways families live.
4. “You Can Take a Turn and Then I’ll Get it Back”
A jingle that teaches kids how to take turns? Put it on repeat! Plus, it’s much more fun than repeatedly yelling, “Please, share!”
3. “Grownups Come Back”
Separation anxiety can make leaving extremely hard. Remind your toddler that goodbyes are temporary with this comforting message.
2. “Friends Help Each Other, Yes They Do”
This is arguably the catchiest song in the Daniel Tiger collection. It sings like a pop hit but includes a wonderful message on how to build friendships.
1. “Goodnight Sun”
Beautiful and almost poetic, you’ll want to sing this simple ballad to your little one—or yourself—every time the sun sets.
